Welcome to the Course This is the fourth Theory of Constraints course. The previous courses addressed flow in general, the primary flow metric of Throughput for a business and the focus on maximising Throughput to improve the performance of the system as a whole, global performance. We also presented Make-to-Availability and Make-to-Order productionor delivery systems. In this course we again apply the 6 flow rules we developed earlier, but this time to the topic of managing projects, another way to deliver, a special case of Make-to-Order. This course is supplemental to other e-learning resources available and builds on the Strategy and Tactics Tree for project based organisations as written by Dr.Goldratt. I am also indebted to Sanjeev Gupta of Realization for his extraordinary insights in the way to manage projects better. I am using some of his material in this course. A few fundamental assumptions needs to be stated at the outset of this course because it drives the thinking behind the course content. I assume that: The product of a project is valuable. The project should not be done if this is not valid. It must enable more Throughput for the business or protect current Throughput. We will discuss this assumption in greater detail later in this course. A shorter lead time to deliver the project’s product increases the value to the business. Improving flow remains the primary objective of the solution that will be developed. I also challenge the widely held assumption that shorter project lead times can only be achieved with increased expenses. This course invalidates this assumption.
