Managing a bookstore comes with an endless list of tasks. Finding the time to curate and maintain a children's section can be dauntingtooltip TIP blue ICON.png. You need to have an expert knowledge of children’s books and merchandise, know what is selling and what is trending. You also need to have the financial skills and buying skills to balance stockholding and negotiate stock and deals. (Please see book buying course)

New books are normally selected from a subscription order that has been compiled by a publisher/distributor. A distributor is an authorized agent of the publisher that usually is the sole source of the title in a given market, handling sales and ordering functions on behalf of the publisher. These new books are also called "frontlist" in the industry. Reorders/replenishmenttooltip TIP blue ICON.png on previously published titles (also known as "backlist" (Links to an external site.)) are usually split between the publisher/distributor and wholesalers. Wholesalers can sell books directly from the publisher and are often used to order difficult to find books or books with no local representation.

If you want to succeed in this field, it's important to know the standard age ranges, genres and formats associated with books for children and young people.
