Ear notching as an example of identification.

An important part of any cattle farm, is the identification and branding of your animals.
If you have only one or two cows, it might not be necessary to be able to identify them, because you’ll probably know them by name. But as soon as you became a bigger beef farmer with fifty or a hundred cattle, it can become difficult to identify them.

The branding of animals can also play a big role if you have problems with stock theft in your area.

You’ll also use permanent identification methods to be able to distinguish between the bad-performing – and the better-performing animals.

The better animal will be kept for the next season while the animal that is not performing well, will make its way to the abattoir.
